THE GIG
Maxixe, Xander the Great, Black Gold Buffalo - London, The Old Blue Last

Tonight’s free show at London’s Old Blue Last has a big draw in the debut live outing from Xander the Great, a Weeknd-indebted London outfit who promise more R&B soaked misery than your average Drake all-night listening sessions. There’s also the addition of Maxixe and Neu favourites Black Gold Buffalo to proceedings.

THE SONG
OLIVER - Pom Pom

This one’s for all the grumpy so-and-sos not embracing the sun. OLIVER’s ‘Pom Pom’ - one of two tracks out there from these Parisian indie-poppers - documents the desires of someone forcing them outside, when they can’t be themselves on a cloudy day. It’s more Riviera than bustling capital, but there’s an undoubted Phoenix-indebted style to the band’s approach too.

The spirit of communion runs riot, with goodness knows how many members finding rapturous escape in dramatic, string-captured juggernauts of songs. ‘Beacons’ might one day be held up as a crucial first step.
