THE BIG NEU THING
Mataya - My Love
My Love (prod. Poncho) by Mataya
Sweet, hip-hop fuelled, shuffling things such as ‘My Love’ are fairly commonplace. Mataya - a new Sydney artist, this being her debut track - coats everything in so-hot-right-now affiliations. Casually swaying between coaxing vocals and shiny, futuristic synths, what might be in vogue also sounds completely at ease, here. There’s no pretence, no desperate attempt to catch the attention of those with only fleeting interests. Mataya is here to stay.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Hideouts
Hideouts EP by Hideouts
On their debut, self-titled EP, Tom Baxter and Cara Mitchell aka Hideouts live up to their name by flocking away from convention, instead finding solace in the curious and playful. Ambient pop is the game, with songs formed out of reverse-cycle loops and vocals that echo and stir instead of sitting firmly in one place. Think Braids with fewer overlapping parts, Animal Collective with fewer acid flashbacks.
