Department M - Leeds, Nation of Shopkeepers

Owen Brinley’s new Department M project is leagues away from the Grammatics background he’s best known for. He’ll have no trouble shaking off his - albeit celebrated - past if early tracks are anything to go by. He’s staying local tonight with a show at Nation of Shopkeepers. It’s free entry.

Marian Hill - Whisky

This collaboration between Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol aka. Marian Hill is vaguely reminiscent of the recent Just Friends / Nico Jaar + Sasha Spielberg project, which produced a jaw-dropping cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Avalanche’ last year. Those sessions produced a wealth of material that eventually got lost through a stolen hard-drive, according to Sasha. You wouldn’t be surprised if Marian Hill were the bandits.

‘Whisky’ is all about the thudding, sparsely-arranged beats and Samantha’s ever-dynamic, flick-switching vocals which stir in the foreground. This is drenched in style, and it’s thriving at the very thought of such.

Bleach Blood - H.O.P.E [DIY Premiere]

Anthemic to the bone, Bleach Blood’s latest track leaves you for dead: It’s chock-full of references to Shakespeare, ‘indestructible kids’ and other such knowhow, but at its core it’s a chantable, festival soundtrack in waiting. Cocksure it might be, but Bleach Blood are aware of their own ridiculous standing and the fact that they’re combining oddball elements for the hell of it. Quit pretences and embrace something that quite simply doesn’t give a fuck.
