New music guide The Neu Bulletin (29th July 2014)

DIY’s new music tips include Neon Waltz, Chalk and FUNKTIONSLUST.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Neon Waltz - Sebright Arms

It’s early days for Caithness’ Neon Waltz, but all signs point forward. Their unabashed, glitter-doused rock ‘n roll benefits from a sweet, under ether effect. Expect it to be a more fleshed-out force live, as they play this London headline show.

THE BIG NEU THING:
FUNKTIONSLUST - SEATS

There’s a disjointed embrace to the way London duo FUNKTIONSLUST go about things. Synth notes are stretched, tested beyond their means. Click-clack drum patterns pierce the surface before buggering off again. Vocals sneak into the spotlight, talk typical things like going to the movies, in a setting that’s anything but everyday. It’s curious, intentionally creepy synth pop that hits the spot despite all its oddities.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Chalk - Everyone’s Problem, No One’s Problem

Later this year, troubled soul Chalk releases his angst-ridden debut record ‘How To Become A Recluse’. If the record’s title is offering any answers, a simple solution to being too active and sociable is to lock yourself in a room, chug out hook-soaked alternative rock like there’s no tomorrow, and load the thing with a lifetime’s worth of frustration. That’s the Chalk routine, and it pays off brilliantly in ‘Everyone’s Problem, No One’s Problem’, the audible equivalent of someone scraping their nails on a chalkboard and somehow getting a kick out of it.
