New music guide The Neu Bulletin (29th May 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Small Wonder, Sulky Boy and Wing Dam.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Small Wonder
London, Power Lunches (Sunday 31st May)
Henry Crawford aka Small Wonder is a staple of the Brooklyn DIY scene and one of the most beloved sources of simple, affecting bedroom pop. He’s over in the UK to play his first ever shows on these shores, this being his only London stopover. Support comes from Yohuna.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Sulky Boy - Things Betwixt
Fresh from playing DIY x Echochamp’s Alt Escape all-dayer in Brighton, Dan Taylor’s putting out a new track via Art Is Hard’s hand-cut 7” club. Paeris Giles (from The Magic Gang) produces this track, which maintains Taylor’s misery-drenched songwriting, all muffled “coos” and yelping cries for help. We would offer him an ice cream to cheer him up, but he sounds so bloody good when he’s at a low.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Wing Dam - House Boat
Baltimore’s Wing Dam give nods to grunge, retro-‘90s fuzz and emo without engulfing themselves too much in any one sound. On their ‘House Boat’ / ‘All For’ 7”, they bring to life an intensely powerful, chugged sense of melodrama. Guitars steer off into the distance while slugging away for life, while vocals range from tense and anxious to all-out, guttural chants.
