New music guide The Neu Bulletin (29th October 2014)

DIY’s batch of new music tips, including Greys, Shivum Sharma and Happy Diving.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Greys - Total Refreshment Centre

Fizzing garage punk doesn’t come much harsher than that belonging to Greys. Despite a debut album being released earlier this year, they’re only just beginning to send shockwaves across the UK, following a DFA 1979 support slot. Tonight sees them headlining a free DIY Presents gig, arranged last-minute on the back of their sudden rise to attention.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Shivum Sharma - All These Years

A year on from first making an impression, Shivum Sharma’s no longer just a fresh face treading new ground. Here’s someone who’s well travelled, verse in the smells and sights of the world, harsh and uplifting experiences to boot. Now he’s looking back. “After all these years, still be here,” he ponders, singing with all the wisdom of an artist three albums in. It’s a honest, soulful projection, is ‘All These Years’.

Taken from a new EP, ‘All These Years’, out 8th December on National Anthem.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Happy Diving - Big World

Happy Diving embrace the new. They’re the types to jump headfirst from ridiculous heights, explore new terrain with the fearlessness of a wild animal released into its habitat for the first time. The San Franciso group’s first work, ‘Big World’, is triumphant to the extreme. Emotionally led by its own wanton lack of restraint, this is a fuzzy force like no other, a ridiculous, gutsy headrush that’s basically unstoppable.

The debut EP is out via Father / Daughter in the States, Art Is Hard (cassette) in the UK.
