New music guide The Neu Bulletin (30th May 2014)

Today’s new music dose features Polterghost and TĀLĀ.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.

The Gig: Polterghost - London, The Old Blue Last

Psych, pop-punk, old school rock ‘n roll - so many ingredients are at play with Polterghost’s youthful, excitable sound. There’s frustration and triumph swimming around their songs, ready to burst from the stage into the hearts of thousands. Big things await.

The Big Neu Thing: Shindigs - It’s Alright

Shindigs Abroad by shindigs

It’s pointless pondering something like this, but what if - in a parallel universe - South Korean-based musician Shindigs wrote jingles for TV, or massive pop hits for Katy Perry? Would his talent be going to waste or would it be better spent than his current existence, where he’s putting out brilliantly melodic tracks, coated under a muffled, lo-fi aesthetic. These songs have their place. ‘It’s Alright’ is probably the sharpest track he’s ever written, shuffling into higher skies that takes it way beyond standard-fare pop. But imagining the musician working his charm on something on a bigger scale is even more enticing.

Other Neu Business:
TĀLĀ - On My Own In Hua Hin

In their own separate ways, every track on TĀLĀ’s debut EP relate to travelling. Not the customary Eat Pray Love, journey of discovery bollocks. This music more relates to the uneasiness of being away in new places. Obviously that experience is exciting, but a big chunk of that comes from the sense of risk, the adrenaline that kicks into life when someone speaking a language you don’t understand huddles you into a nearby bus that promises to take you to your hotel. Anything can happen. In the same respect, EP highlight ‘On My Own In Hua Hin’ could veer off in any and every direction. As it plays out, the song keeps its firm, kicking cool under pressure. It’s anything but homesick.
