Features The Neu Bulletin (31st October 2012)
An unintentionally spooky update of all the goings on in new music.
Neu’s got you covered for new music recommendations and nights out this week. Each day we’ll give you a choice gig, plus a selection of fresh artists to check out.
THE GIG
Death At Sea, Wolf Alice, Honey - Queen of Hoxton
London’s hippest corner welcomes in a host of talent from up North (and the Midlands) tonight. Liverpool’s Death At Sea will rinse your ears with stadium-ready anthems, while Wolf Alice will prompt you to hole yourself up in your bedroom, cry and write poetry. Honey, meanwhile, are an even fresher prospect, so it’ll be interesting to see what the local group bring to the stage. In the case of Wolf Alice, it’ll be Frankenstein costumes and creepy as hell monocles.
Wolf Alice, Death At Sea and Honey hit up the Queen of Hoxton, London, tonight.
THE SONG
Espher - You Are Loved
Maybe it’s just the Halloween thing, but in Manchester producer Espher’s latest cut, I’m feeling a slight sense of unease and tension, even when the message of the song - laid bare in its title - is so gently reassuring. The production on this track lies somewhere between Deptford Goth’s haunting soundscapes and the eerie haze of No Ceremony - it’s a delicious concoction of creepy juices, and once the ghosts have settled into the ether for another year, by tomorrow it’ll probably sound like the most beautiful, reassuring song around.
FURTHER NEU BUSINESS
Death Masks - Times Six
I promise you, I went into writing this Neu Bulletin with not the slightest intention of creeping you out, or abiding by the Halloween theme. It’s coincidence - a happy one - that this occasion just so happened to lead to the blossoming of a wonderful friendship. Death Masks (which are basically those things you’ll be wearing tonight) is the name gracing this new Liverpool band. ‘Times Six’ is streamable up above.
