THE GIG
Tvvins, Lawrence Rothman - London, Birthdays
Dalston haunt Birthdays plays host to two electronic triumphants, working with distinctly different tools. Tvvins - a band made up of members from The Cast Of Cheers and Adebisi Shank - go for giddy synth-pop, while LA producer Lawrence Rothman skews style and image conventions to back up his bubbling, eerie craft.
THE BIG NEU THING
Blossomer - To The Sea
Sheffield’s Blossomer are a curious bunch. What they emerge with is essentially straight-down-the-line, gorgeously glazed pop. But it’s pronounced and executed with grand, stately declarations, falsetto that steers things out of conventional territory. There’s a desire to be daring lining the seams of ‘To The Sea’, a song that drives minimalism into devilish new directions in a way that’s both exciting and there to snapped up by other bands in the future. Hugely innovative, especially for a first step.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Client Liaison
Free Of Fear by Client Liaison
Mullets are back. Don’t hit the alarm buzzer. Stop for a second. Look around, calm yourself, breathe a little. Client Liaison just opened up a can of worms, here. Nostalgic retro-pop has its limits, and this Australian dance duo are looking to push them. Channelling Cut Copy in shameless 90s rave nods, this is mullet-pop, ready for action. Say hello to mullet-pop. You’ll be getting used to it in the coming months.
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
