THE GIG
NO - London, Sebright Arms
The LA National-Channellers NO have been milling around London for the past week, all in the build up to this curious headline show. Expect many a punter to be converted, dreaming of the days they can bask in the band’s back-catalogue, ten years on. It’s early days, but NO are showing signs of being in it for the long run.
THE SONG
WORSHYPER - Calm & Haunt
Their name essentially refers to a person who worships ‘hype’ (y’know, like fickle old us, in truth) and ‘Calm & Haunt’ might be fully loaded to point of collapse with hype-gathering tools - high-pitched vocals, synths driven into overload - but the whole thing works with such a charm WORSHYPER are fast forgiven. The Philadelphia trio place soul in every empty crevice, declaring how they ‘forgot how to show you love’ before launching into a harshly driven, aptly romantic chorus.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Séyi - icecold
Upping the soul stakes by some distance is this debut song from enigmatic ‘male’ Séyi, featuring his ‘flatmate’ in ‘icecold’. It’s a breathless, pop-inclined rush, which had it ended up in the grappling palms of a Rihanna or such, would’ve burst straight into the higher echelons of the charts. For now, it remains gloriously under the radar, prepped for bigger things.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
