THE GIG
Cheatahs - London, Colony
Just weeks until the release of their (brilliant) debut full-length, Cheatahs intend on bringing the house down before you can begin to set the table for Christmas dinner. Shoegaze-nodding noise is their thing, and they’re getting more assured at their craft with each step.
THE BIG NEU THING
Seán Carpio
WOWOS by Seán Carpio
Dublin’s Seán Carpio puts the ‘WOW’ in his debut release ‘WOWOW’. Head in the clouds, daisy chains inevitably dressing his brow, the experimental pop newcomer gives folk a playful, ever-changing sheen. On ‘Is It Any Wonder?’ (above), he channels Gruff Rhys/ Jim Noir in a determinist streak of nature-loving excitability. Timeless in approach - because psychedelia never gets old, let’s face it - neat touches make ‘WOWOW’ an impressive take on something that’s been tried and tested so much, it’s beginning to wear thin.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Tev’n - Solitude Mixtape
It’s a strange title, ‘Solitude’. North Londoner Tev’n doesn’t exactly write music that’d fit lonely nights in with a phone that never buzzes, a still silence. This is companionship, hot and steamy surroundings the chosen setting. Each teasing slice of minimalism that rinses this debut comes from the mind of someone used to intimacy. It’s all over the surface, etched into the centre. It surprises and confuses, bedazzles with every move.
