New music guide The Neu Bulletin (5th January 2015)

DIY delivers new music tips from ESC and Mal Devisa.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

ESC - Call Your Phone

Simple pop ditties take strange shape if they’re trying to stand out in a crowd. ESC’s ‘Call Your Phone’ sees Elliot Cheng transferring his smooth R&B obsession to new territory. Backed by a very of-the-moment cover of Kanye West’s ‘Only One’ newbie, his own material packs together a Frank Ocean sense of smoothness, backed by Elliot’s own romantic voicemail recordings. Take his word and go round to his for dinner - it’s a safe bet.

Mal Devisa - Sunrise

Loosely wound and free to stir, Mal Devisa packs experimental folk and soul into one clever package on her ‘Sunrise’ track. Taken from the ‘4U’ release from 2014, it sounds affirmatively ahead of the game, a gorgeous ode to longstanding friendships that looks like lasting the test of time.
