New music guide The Neu Bulletin (5th June 2015)

DIY’s new music tips, featuring Tei Shi, GIRLI and The Derevolutions.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Tei Shi (pre-Field Day party)

London, Shacklewell Arms

There’s a big crowd of blog-friendly artists making hazy, mood-altering pop, but Tei Shi’s always stood out by being more direct and hard-hitting. The difference is emphasised even more when she plays live. She might be surrounded by vocal effects and electronic loops, but she also possesses the kind of heart-stopping vocal that’ll steal a show in seconds. She plays the DIY stage at Field Day tomorrow, and tonight she plays the festival’s free pre-party. RSVP here.

THE BIG NEU THING:
GIRLI - So You Think You Can Fuck With Me Do Ya

It’s time to talk about GIRLI. There’s music that splits crowds , and then there’s the kind that’ll actually have people breaking out in fights because they disagree so intently. When Hannah Diamond first arrived via candy-coated, high-pitched irony, there was nothing else around quite like her. The love/hate divide was clear. A similar reception’s going to follow GIRLI, an East London pop maverick who refuses to follow rules or bow down to convention. ‘So You Think You Can Fuck With Me Do Ya’ is obnoxious, borderline offensive, but bloody hell does it pack a bonkers chorus. We know which side of the fence we’re on. The lyric “you thought I was gonna do a ballad? Fuck off” is up there with Charli XCX in no-shits delivery.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
The Derevolutions - Don’t Get Me Wrong

For some bizarre reason, hyper-acute producer The Derevolutions hasn’t been snapped up by a licensing company yet, and he’s not currently soundtracking YOLO-enhancing television ads, or closing scenes in teen movies. His sunshine aesthetic is one thing, but there’s also a serious punch to his production. ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ is only a demo, but it’s delivered with clarity and a genuine vision.
