I mean, pop music - in the pure, glossy form we encounter here - is impossible to leave on the doorstep, serenading up towards your window. It’s ever-present, always roaming around for bold ideas. And some of these come in the form of this new Londoner’s early demos, the latest being another stark lesson in how to keep things simple and affecting.

Engage by West View

Henry Barraclough is schooled in the Julian Casablancas croon. The kind that’s only developed with the invention of the microphone, to the point where every intake of breath leads to an extra hair standing up on your spine. Barraclough’s West View project doesn’t dress its songs up on quickfire riffs, though. Instead it opts for a thick chunk of overlapping noise, all guitar-led and gutter-dwelling. Lo-fi? Sure. Woah-fi? YES.
