THE GIG
Moko - Hoxton Bar and Kitchen

A Moko live show involves hazardous hair swinging, fist thumping and the kind of beats that’d get a warehouse party shut down in the mid ’90s. It’s a cause for celebration, and it’s very Friday night.

THE BIG NEU THING
Whatever, Dad
100% Take Home! by WHATEVER, DAD

Elaiza Santos’ Whatever, Dad is a project with serious history, the kind that’d take an immersive evening’s worth of listening, downloading and so on to catch up with. Santos also performs as Crying, which is a fair bit different to the thinking behind new LP ‘100% Take Home!’ These songs take mundane oddities, strange objects and turn them into a source of clever, heartfelt songwriting. It’s all very immersed in being do-it-yourself and New York etc., but it’s a tipping point for a DIY scene that’s looking set to bubble-up over the next 12 months. Whatever, Dad applies barely-there acoustics to words that stick to the surface, jab at the conscience. It’s often breathtaking.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
MINIMAX
light light by MINIMAX

On the opposite end of the spectrum: MINIMAX. Whereas Whatever, Dad (above) might opt for subtle songwriting all coated in soft and fluffy production, this project sports a determinist streak when it’s all about the synths. Mountains of the stuff, towering above ultra-echoey, nearly non-decipherable vocals. Like Ariel Pink if he’d been raised on Korgs, this is theatrical, attention-grabbing stuff, all performed with sweet ol’ electronics.
