New music guide The Neu Bulletin (6th May 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Flo Morrissey, Family Friends and The Hipshakes.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Flo Morrissey supports Tobias Jesso Jr
Last night saw Tobias Jesso Jr melting hearts on Jools Holland. Tonight he takes to a headline show at London’s Courtyard Theatre, and he’s picked a brilliant tour support in the ultra-inventive Flo Morrissey. Her folk-rooted songs are anything but lulling, instead running rings around convention while seeking a new path.

Anything but a distant relative, Family Friends are soon to become a familiar face. A brother-sister duo residing in East London, they give nods to Black Honey and Superfood on their instant fix of a debut track, ‘On Your Mind’. Schooled in blues and nagging hooks, they’re a perfect match. It’s taken from an EP, ‘Across the Water’.
THE BIG NEU THING:Family Friends — On Your Mind
Less a gentle sway and bore a berserk dance-off, The Hipshakes know how to get moving. Their first release has been produced by Hookworms’ MJ at Suburban Home, ‘My Confession’ being a rollicking standout. “Can you feel the distance between us?” they bark, barely aware that this is one of the finest, most obnoxious songs to arrive in 2015 so far.
