Features The Neu Bulletin (7th April 2014)
Neu’s daily new music guide features Eyes & No Eyes, dd elle and Mirage.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG
Eyes & No Eyes support Peggy Sue - Brighton, Green Door Store
Over the next two weeks, London group Eyes & No Eyes give life to their self titled debut album by touring with Peggy Sue across the country. To those unfamiliar with their woozy dose of melancholy-led songwriting, it’s delivered with intense intricacy; part Warpaint, part Department of Eagles. This makes it unmissable, in short.
THE BIG NEU THING
Mirage
Blood For The Return by Mirage
If Gruff Rhys swallowed a bucketful of bleach or if Xiu Xiu made music for nuns, the end result might sound a little like Mirage. Innocent on the outside, there’s still something brilliantly fucked up about debut EP ‘Blood For The Return’, a work that shadows all sorts of musical knowhow in an oddball aesthetic. Similar to how Unknown Mortal Orchestra work, deep craft is dressed in crazy patterns as a means of distracting. The opening title-track of this release is the best indication you’ll get that this is being done on purpose.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
dd elle - love me only
Continuing down the mysterious route, dd elle remains one of the most intriguing producers this side of Oceaan or, whisper it, Jai Paul. Melodies that could sneak their way into a top 40 are shot down, split open into their purest form. On ‘love me only’, this curious producer continues to sound like Grimes under the ether, or SBTRKT on sedatives. This one’s dark as sin, too.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
