New music guide The Neu Bulletin (9th July 2015)

DIY’s new music tips, featuring a Hooton Tennis Club show, plus songs from The Gloomies and Living Grateful.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Hooton Tennis Club (w/ King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard)

Bonkers band names are the flavour of the day, and tonight sees two beloved guitar-wielding sharing a stage in King’s Cross. Hooton Tennis Club have a head-turning debut album up their sleeves, full of wit and sharp melodic knowhow. They join King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard for a show at Scala.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Living Grateful - A Peer

Travel across the States in a knackered car, plug into local radio stations and chances are the odd, misty-eyed gem will spring up. You can imagine a song like Living Grateful’s ‘A Peer’ creeping through the dodgy stereo, its mix of classic influences being enhanced by a dusty aesthetic. Building on legends like Lou Reed while giving nods to Foxygen’s nostalgia-laced trade, the song’s taken from the band’s ‘Peace Mob’ album.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
The Gloomies - LSD

In contrast to the scatterbrained ‘deep-thinking’ or outward experiences its title might suggest, The Gloomies’ ‘LSD’ is a clear-headed introduction. Raised in The New Desert, the two-piece deal in sludgy, synth-enhanced rock. This song comes off like a cross between Warpaint’s Joshua Tree adventures running headfirst into Kevin Parker mid-trip.
