New music guide The Neu Bulletin (9th June 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Clean Cut Kid, la HORSE and Oceaán.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Clean Cut Kid
London, The Social
It’s a ridiculous night for gigs in the capital. Theo Verney plays a freebie at Birthdays (read our interview with the Brighton fuzz fiend, if you’re going), Girlpool play Rough Trade East and Health make their live return at Tufnell Park Dome. But if you’re looking to see an exciting new band for the first time, look no further than Clean Cut Kid. Their debut single premiered on DIY earlier this month - a Haim-nodding blast of funk-laced pop, it’s one of the most exciting introductions in yonks.
THE BIG NEU THING:
la HORSE - Nothing From The Monkey Is Free
One foot planted in Damon Albarn’s apeshit imagination, another in drone paradise, la HORSE are a devilish new entity from London. An Alex Turner-style twang rules over everything, but there’s plenty else to bask in - a sea of organs, outlandish lyrics, enough swagger to rob a bank without anyone noticing.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Oceaán - Conviction (Live AV Teaser)
It’s been a long time coming, but Oceaán’s been waiting in the wings with a live show to tackle hype head on. The Manchester producer’s expanded to a full band, bringing in a huge bed of electronics and live instruments to ensure that this is anything but head-bopping laptop nonsense. The above teaser lands ahead of his AV debut at London’s Courtyard Theatre, 11th June.
