Neu The Neu Bulletin (Body Type, Island Of Love, Alexander 23 and more!)

DIY’s essential, weekly (ish) guide to the best new music.

Neu Bulletins are DIY’s guide to the best new music. Each week, we pick out fave new tracks out of all the exciting, emerging artists we’ve been playing at full volume over the past seven days.

We’ve also got a handy Spotify playlist where you can find all the Neu tracks we’ve been loving, so you can listen to all our hot tips in one place!

Body Type - Sex & Rage

It’s been a hot minute since Aussie quartet Body Type were last feeding our ears, but after a prolonged period away, ‘Sex & Rage’ marks the beginning of a long-overdue debut LP and a more than welcome return from the effervescent girl gang. A fuzzy ode to the need for spark and stimulation in an increasingly cauterised world, the track’s central needling riff darts around cries to be “set aflame”, as heavy-hitting drum rolls stalk the pavement in search of some good times. Body Type are still just our type. (Lisa Wright)

Island Of Love – Songs Of Love

London’s Island Of Love are the first ever signings to Third Man Records’ London division. Originally called Love Island, they jumbled the words to escape ITV’s lawyers and wrote new track ‘Songs Of Love’, a scrappy and endearing first song that has the melodies and heart needed to make future indie-rock greats. They’re also a great live band too, with a live performance of the track from their London label HQ shared alongside the new track. (Will Richards)

Alexander 23 - Hate Me If It Helps

Returning with his first new music in nearly a year, when he was not hard at work co-writing Olivia Rodrigo’s banger ‘good 4 u’ (and scoring the 6th position on our Best Tracks of 2021), Chicago’s Alexander 23 has been cooking up something special. Back with ‘Hate Me If It Helps’, Alexander got Liv back in the studio for the co-write, and together they’ve crafted a heart-string pulling tale of wanting your ex to do whatever they need to do to get over a breakup (“So tell your friends I’m evil / Write songs that say I suck”). Packing the guitar-led pop song with an emotional punch, Alexander’s knack for writing a break-up banger has never been more clear. (Elly Watson)

Maria BC – The Only Thing

‘The Only Thing’, the first taster of Maria BC’s debut album ‘Hyaline’ – released in May via Father/Daughter (US) and Fear Of Missing Out (UK/EU) – is a song about the “full, effervescent, sun-is-coming-up feeling of new love,” they say. These feelings are transmitted gorgeously through their stunning voice, which rises to goosebump-inducing peaks and has hints of FKA twigs, all filtered through a delicate, sparse indie-rock framework. Its arresting video, of a subject being thrown about by the elements on a snowy beach, furthers this sense of emotional heaviness and beauty. (Will Richards)

New German Cinema – I Become Heavy

New German Cinema is the new solo project of Fear Of Men mastermind Jessica Weiss. On the project’s first track, ‘I Become Heavy’, the dark, swirling nature of Fear Of Men still resides, but Weiss swaps the post-punk tendencies of the band for bubbling bass and soaring synth-pop. For her voice – a powerful but ethereal instrument – the new textures work perfectly. (Will Richards)
