******** - Kinderpunsch
Formerly known as Guinness, this London duo have now changed their name to ********, and announced the re-release of their debut album, called ‘The Drink’. Sarcasm clearly comes naturally to this pair, and first single ‘Kinderpunsch’ begins with the pair sat in Stoke Newington pub The Old Shillelagh, notorious for serving one of the capital’s best pints of the black stuff. A drawling, hilarious account of mundanity, ‘Kinderpunsch’ is a glorious first step, and “club me with your Clubcard” might already be the lyric of the year. (Will Richards)
Teenage Wrist - Swallow
One of Epitaph’s newest signings, the music LA garage trio Teenage Wrist can easily trace the lineage of one of America’s most notorious punk labels. ‘Swallow’, the first cut from the band’s upcoming debut LP, is lathered in fuzz and murky vocals, but never abandons melody; it becomes increasingly catchy with repeated listens, and points to brilliant things from the full-length, out this year. Patawawa – Patagonia
Listen to those funk-laden grooves and dancefloor-filling beats on Patawawa’s latest single ‘Patagonia’. Now, guess where they might be from. New York? LA? Nah, they’re from Matlock. So no, that’s probably not the first place you’d think of when asked to name a hotbed of delectable disco. Nevertheless, the trio are helping put the Derbyshire town on the map. With an EP under French imprint Splinter on the horizon, ‘Patagonia’ kicks off their 2018 with joyous, buoyant vintage pop filled with acres of charisma and effortless style. (Eugenie Johnson)
Phobophobes - Miniature World
The artwork for the title track to Phobophobes’ debut album ‘Miniature World’ is the latest in a series of photos of a petri dish, tracking the progress of a swab taken of a microphone in the Abbey Road studio they, Bowie, John Lennon and more recorded in. It takes you aback almost as much as the track itself, a gloomy, screeching addition to the already booming South London scene of young guitar bands. As concerned with feedback-driven tangents as it is with its massive chorus, ‘Miniature World’ places Phobophobes right up there with the next in line to the capital’s throne. (Will Richards)
