Image isn’t everything, but you don’t need a pop culture professor (side note: is that a real occupation?) to tell you how a striking visual can seal the deal. Remember how La Roux’s haircut was always mentioned alongside chat about her music? Think about Bowie, Gaga, Grace Jones. Sorry, I’m being patronising. When you think about image, those superstars immediately come to mind. The White Album aren’t superstars (yet) but by golly, their image sure sticks with you. And it’s all at behest of three commanding beards.

The sound, though, of these three Scandinavian folk musicians, is a little more clean-cut than the above image might suggest. There’s a ruggedness to songs like ‘Your Mouth Is A Fist’ and ‘Counting Treasures’ - both of which appear at opposite ends of a delightful mini-album, ‘Conquistador’, forthcoming - but the voices that emerge from behind the beard collective are hearty and tender. If you give those beards a good old shake (which I suggest you don’t, if those above scowls are ever a sign) melodic notes, rather than a few old cigarette butts, would shuffle out contentedly.

Stream the video for ‘Your Mouth Is A Fist’ below, taken from the ‘Conquistador’ album, due out through Popular Recordings. Release date TBA.
