The Yawns name may suggest languor and lethargy, but the name is something of a red herring as in reality the Glasgow quintet make lovely guitar pop positively bursting with melody. The band comprise of 4 guys and 1 girl and released their self-titled album last month though Cath Records, a small Glasgow based label that has released records by Bronto Skylift, and Neu favourites Paws and Dolfinz. It is a slight record that offers a lovely introduction to the The Yawns blend of lo-fi garage rock and timeless indie pop.
Lead track on the debut ‘Summers Wasted’ is perhaps their best moment so far. Naïve and blissfully carefree it is as nigh on as you can possibly get to a perfect guitar pop record. The groups insidious, expertly crafted guitar lines feature prominently here and throughout the rest of the album. It is a sound you cannot help but fall in love with.
There is a harder edged side to the band shown on tracks like the rollicking ‘I Believe In UFO’s that sits well alongside some of the more dewey eyed material such as the dreamy ballad ‘Butterfleyes’. The one thing all of these songs have in common though is that they share a wonderfully wide-eyed charm. The Yawns are certainly a band that bears the sound of their influences but at the same time, it is rare that you come across a band that is quite so adept at harnessing those influences into a sound that is so effective. The Yawns are a band with an exceedingly promising future.
