Neu This Week In New Music (20th October 2012)

Neu picks its favourites from the past seven days of new music happenings. Featuring Roses Gabor and Wolf Alice.

This week I’ve been hearing lots of people complaining about the fact that word’s getting round about end of 2012 lists. “It’s only bloody October!” goes the chorus. Album releases are drying up - but for a few special last-ditch inclusions - so maybe it is time to count up favourites and revisit favourites. But new music never really stops. Even when everybody’s off on their Christmas holidays, there’s always some smart new face poking their head round the corner. This week’s been a prime example, where we’ve been near flattened by a stampede of PR submissions and soundcloud links. It’s all very exciting, if a little unnerving. You can’t hear everything, after all.

Here’s a rundown of our very favourites: the best of what new music’s had to offer throughout the past seven days:

TRACK OF THE WEEK
Wolf Alice have just announced plans to head off on a tour with Peace before the end of the year. It might seem an odd fit to the naked eye, but consider it a bill of new music royalty, where at least one of, if not both acts, on the bill are headed for wonderful successful things. If I was pushed to pick an act out of the two that’ll still be played endlessly in years’ time, Wolf Alice would probably sneak it. That’s on the basis of new track ‘Leaving You’, which by the time it kicks into full gear, becomes a breathtaking display of heart-sinking, bolshy brilliance.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Never underestimate the power of a jumpsuit. Roses Gabor, up there, wears an angular looking, semi-skeletal outfit (is that the correct term? I don’t hang around in arty circles), against a backdrop of luscious colours and sparkly surroundings. Few musicians could pull it off, but Roses Gabor, future superstar that she is, simply adds a further dose to her amounting appeal.

DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK

If a rise up the electronic ladder is guaranteed by the use of a striking looking mask, Brighton’s Eagles For Hands, staring ominously up top, is set for SBTRKT-scale stardom. ‘Hot Telescopic’, which we first waxed lyrical on two days’ back in a Neu Bulletin, is certainly capable of turning giant arenas into glittering, sweat-filled dancehalls. It’s worth keeping tabs on this guy: His next step is an EP on famed label Get Some.
