News This Week In New Music (23rd February 2013)

Neu’s weekly round-up features stellar cuts from Brolin, Duke Dumont and GHOST EYES.

In a week that could’ve been defined by a goat’s ability to mimic a dubstep womp, be thankful that a whole bunch of musicians competed for prizes beyond Youtube hits and a spotty, Damian Hurst-designed figurine or two. Accolades were in gluttonous supply this week. Everywhere you turned, awards, awards, awards. Fortunately this didn’t stop the below from releasing new tracks to distract us from the imperishable presence of Emili Sandé.
Neu’s weekly round-up of new music finds a masked man gradually unveiling a little bit more to his character; a guy with a boombox trapped in his stomach and a London group who might just be picking up a few actual gongs in the coming years, so long as they don’t have to put up with James Corden idly and unearnestly telling everyone on the tele how amazing they are.

TRACK OF THE WEEK
Brolin - Reykjavik

Late nights need to be soundtracked by Luke Abbott. Be it throughout the warm-up to a night out, or the soundtrack to a knuckle-down study session, his tense, perfectly-aligned electronic tracks ought to be ever-present. It’s nice to see Abbott expanding into production to help out with masked-magician Brolin, here. The London ‘bedroom producer’ edges his way out of claustrophobia of his homemade studio and into a more vivid light. ‘Reykyavik’ heads a terrific new EP in ‘Cundo’, out on Double Denim on 25th March.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Duke Dumont - Need U (100%) Feat. A*M*E

This video wouldn’t work for any old song. The concept of a speakerbox being placed within someone’s tummy, leading them to being chased by strangers who find the beat addictive, is a hilarious one. But it only works so well because ‘Need U (100%’)’ is truly that catchy. So while we feel sorry for the video’s protagonist who ends up on a surgery table in an attempt to get the god damn speaker out of his system, we’d probably settle for keeping the song playing. After all, it’s been stuck in our heads for weeks as it is.

DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK
Ghost Eyes
Black Magic EP by GHOST EYES
Up above is the new EP from London’s GHOST EYES. It’s in the opening two tracks that sparks really fly. ‘Another Moon’ thrives in invention, while the following ‘Fear & Fever’ track is on a Sleigh Bells level of going gung-ho with pure, forceful noiiiiise. Afropop samples mixed with a Purity Ring aesthetic? It sounds like heaven, doesn’t it? You won’t be disappointed.
