Interview Tommy Genesis: “I just want this album to be the soundtrack to your life”

Announcing new album ‘goldilocks x’ today, we catch up with the self-described “fetish rapper” to find out more.

After returning with her first single in two years, ‘peppermint’, back in May, self-described “fetish rapper” and certified bop-maker Tommy Genesis has announced that her new record ‘goldilocks x’ will be landing on 10th September!

Following earlier records, 2018’s ‘Tommy Genesis’ and 2015’s ‘World Vision’, Tommy says of the album, “Goldilocks is that feeling when things feel ‘just right’. Like you’re entering a space that makes sense, you just can’t put your finger on why but it just does. You don’t know why you like it but you do. The X is the unknown factor, the experimental element, the punk.”

Sharing intoxicating new track ‘a woman is a god’ alongside the news, we sent her over some qs to find out more!

Hey Tommy, how are you?
I’m good ! I’m alive ! I’m out here straddling infinite worlds.

‘goldilocks x’ is your first record in three years! How does it feel to be back?
It feels so fucking good. Like I’m finally able to share with everyone what I’ve been up to. I tend to just hibernate so it’s good for me cause I leave my house, I become alive in the world- not just in my world.

Why did now feel like the right time to return?
To be completely honest I didn’t choose this specific time but I’m running with it. Sometimes I feel like the time chooses you.

What makes this album different to your previous offerings?
This album is an entire person. I touched a new space in my own personal methodology of creation. For me I took more risks sonically but also let go more, tried less in a lot of ways. In the best ways. Sometimes you have to not care to make something important. I’ve always been a conceptual artist so sometimes music feels like finger painting to me. But I just finger painted the fuck out of this album.

When did you start working on the album?
This album started 2 years ago from the earliest songs up until a few months ago for the latest tracks.

Where did you find inspiration for the album?
Honestly, I always name projects after the fact but this one I named mid-creation. For me it’s a sweet spot. It’s just right. That’s why I used the goldilocks concept, the “x” is the punk, experimental element. I always find inspiration from within. I just like to be alone inside my thoughts and feelings and I pull from that. Like I’m pulling out a newborn, I just have to nurture it a touch.

What are some of the stories that informed the record?
For “Men” I texted my group chat asking everyone to tell me what they hated about men. I literally paraphrased it and got in the studio. Each song has a different story, I’ve been thinking I’ll post each story for each song once it all drops.

What made you choose ‘a woman is a god’ as your lead single?
To me this song just hits different. I really just fucking love it. I personally want to listen to it and it feels like one of those hooks that every woman can relate to. I really love women and I love to uplift and empower them however I can. I’m definitely a girl’s girl.

What do you hope people take away from this album?
Honestly I just want this album to be the soundtrack to your life. I want people to relate to it, turn up to it, cry to it, fuck to it and just fucking live to it. It really is just an extension of me, and I think even though I love to shock I love to uplift even more. So I hope this album resonates with people and they feel loved and worthy of everything they want in life. The best compliment I’ve ever heard is, your music empowers me. I’m just trying to keep that going.

What can people expect from you for the rest of the year?
I’m about to go off.
