News Tour Diary: Husky (Part One)

Sub Pop signings Husky have been keeping a tour diary for DIY, keeping us abreast of the latest going ons on their European tour.

I’m on a boat.

We are crossing the English channel on a ferry. In my head, I’m singing ‘I’m On A Boat’ by ‘The Lonely Island’ over and over. It’s a big ferry this one, with people and cars and trucks and Winnebagos and restaurants and slot machines all aboard. It seems to float without any issues. Still I find myself switching in my head between ‘I’m On A Boat’ and ‘My Heart Will Go On’. I’m tired. My thoughts are normally more intellectual, promise!

We’ve had a good time in London and Brighton. The shows have been really good, the English audiences have been kind. Brighton was like a little holiday, a pretty and laid back town by the sea, laced with narrow lane ways in which you’ll find a little coffee shop or second hand shoe store one day, but then you’ll never be able to relocate it. We stayed in the basement of an old hotel which smelt like it had been flooded back in the 1800’s and just never dried out. We played three shows, one in the rain and two indoors, but all were well received by the good folk of Brighton.

London was faster, busier, bustling and grand, the people always going places, heading somewhere, somewhere important it seems. We visited Brick Lane for a salt beef bagel and some record shopping and checked out Shoreditch before heading to an old pub for a couple of dark ales and a five pound burger and chips. We played a little show at the Bull & Gate the next day, and a show with the Jezabels the day after, with a little bit of exploring around Kentish Town and Brixton before the shows and some beer tasting after the shows.

On the other side of this ferry ride we’ll arrive on the continent, as they call it. First stop Brussels, then four shows throughout Germany, a show in Paris and a show in Amsterdam. Then a couple of days off in Amsterdam, which I imagine we will need. Then back to London for our record release at Rough Trade East and then on to America.

I keep looking out the window and imagining David Walliams swimming beside the ferry in his ‘Lady’s’ costume, smiling at me and saying, ‘I’m a lady’. I’m tired. All these different beds, I can’t get used to it. Still, as our stage hand at the Jezabels show said last night, we’ve got a pretty good deal, touring the world the way we do…

‘I’ve got a pretty good deal with my wife,’ he said, in his Irish accent. ‘I don’t sleep with other women, and she won’t cut my throat while I sleep’.

Check band later this week for Part Two.
