Features Tracks Of 2007: #3 LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great

It was nearly impossible to choose between the two remaining LCD Soundsystem tracks in our list. For anyone else, ‘Someone Great’ would be a triumph. It is a triumph, and remains one of the best singles this year (obviously). It was good, nay great, enough to warrant us breaking our one-track-per-artist not once, but twice. Yes, there are three entries from the house of Murphy, and this is only the second.

It’s everything you’d never expect from an act best known for dancefloor fillers; it’s delicate, beautiful and heartfelt. It has the innate ability to make you cry in the way in which ‘Everybody Hurts’ has done so for years. For someone so meticulous a musician, so intent on producing the right sound, it’s almost surprising to realise that the key to ‘Someone Great’ is the lyrics - the sounds around them are, in places, merely incidental. And yet it’s quite possible for the instrumental version to tug those exact same heartstrings. Someone give James Murphy a hug from us, stat.
