What’s the best way of finding out lots and lots about a new band in quite a short period of time? Just ask them lots of questions really quickly.
We put our quickfire Q&A to ‘ambitionless office disco’ trio Trophy Wife, whose debut release ‘Microlite’ will be released next week (8th November). You can also catch them right now supporting Foals on tour (pick up tickets here).
Why did you, personally, join the band?
We set out to give ourselves a new challenge.
Where did you all meet?
It was bit of a mix up really; Jody pretended to be a female drummer in order to get into Kit’s post rock band. We then met Ben with his laptop in a cafe and went back to Kit’s garage and made some glitchy music.
Are you working on a full-length album yet?
We have our sights set on an EP release early next year and are writing towards that at the moment. When the new year starts we hope to start thinking about a debut album.
What’s the best thing about being a band in Oxford?
Everyone knows one another so it’s easy to get a band together here, there are so many for such a small place. It is a self contained universe all of its own which can be limiting if you’re not inclined to venture outside of it. It’s a bit like a cresh.
What has been your favourite moment as a band?
At this stage it has to be playing our first live shows and getting a positive response.
When you first started to get into music, who was your favourite musician?
Hank Marvin.
Name one album that would appear in your Top Five of all time so far.
‘Pet Sounds’.
If you had to learn a new instrument, what would you choose?
The Crumhorn.
What’s your favourite ‘being in a band’ perk?
Having something to do in your spare time that isn’t browsing the internet.
Where would you most like to be right now?
On a cable car ascending the Bavarian alps.
What would your superpower be?
Russia.
What’s your most unappealing habit?
Twitter.
Who would you most like to go on a huge world tour with?
Grace Jones.
Are there any parts of being in a band you’d leave out if you could?
Indeed; being last in the shower queue, being destitute, reverse parking, surviving on a diet of pitta and carrot sticks.
Would you ever go solo?
Never. Unless there is an English folk revival.
What was the last album / single you bought?
Something by Morgan Geist and ‘Flaws’ by Bombay Bicycle Club.
What is your music-purchasing format of choice?
Vinyl or second-hand mp3.
Recommend us a new band.
Pet Moon.
Where would you like to be this time next year?
Arcadia.
What’s next on the cards for Trophy Wife?
We’re going to continue writing then we go out on tour with Foals. Our debut release will be coming out on November 8th which we’ll be celebrating at London Elektrowerkz the following night.
