Turnip King is a terrible name - there are no two ways about it. Don’t be fooled by it though, because here exists a stupidly exciting group, one of the most thrilling New York prospects for some time. Formerly known as Beach Moms, the four piece are from Sea Cliff, a stone’s throw away from the garage rock breeding ground Brooklyn. Just like their neighbouring Brooklynites, this is a project that’s been born in a dark and dingy basement. And it benefits from that hardy, rough-edged aesthetic.
There might be an abundance of fuzz pedal obsessed-types experimenting with shoegaze and garage rock, but Turnip King have mastered blending these genres into something unique, in a welcome, crucial addition to an overflowing scene. The taster for their forthcoming EP, ‘Moon Landing?’ is ambitious, and the jangly pop beginnings of ‘Rooms/Fleece’ don’t sound a million miles away from Los Campesinos!, but soon it evolves into an explorative, noise distorting jam that doesn’t give a fuck about boundaries.
The ‘Moon Landing’ cassette is out 28th May - pre-order.
With Bob Vylan, St Vincent, girl in red, Lizzy McAlpine and more.
