Quite apropos for Valentines Day, The Flaming Lips, kings of pushing musical, metaphorical and metaphysical envelopes, released a single called ‘Two Blobs Fucking’.
It was released via YouTube and has been made to be heard in a large group of people, or by one person with many phones: twelve to be exact. Each video clip is 220 seconds long and must be played in sync to achieve the actual tune of the song.
This is the latest experiment in technology from these guys. In 1997, they asked their audience to play their four-disc album ‘Zaireeka’ across four stereos. They later curated an event known as The Parking Lot Experiments where they had people bring their cars to a parking lot to play one of forty cassette tapes, creating a twenty minute sound composition. They expanded the concept by touring the album by using Boomboxes for the appropriately titled Boombox Experiment - the audience controlled the equipment while Wayne Coyne and Steve Drozd acted as conductors.
These days, The Flaming Lips are taking (and running with) the concept of digital music to a whole new level of understanding. They have made a habit of playing with the way music is delivered and this is merely an extension of it, using two of the most powerful tools around: phones and YouTube. They make technology bend to their sound.
The videos themselves haven’t been ignored either, they’ve also taken the time to make the clips visually interesting so the experience is one for all the senses. Well, maybe not taste, touch or smell; we wouldn’t recommend licking or sniffing your computer screen.
So everyone isn’t confused, Coyne and Drozd have put together an instructional video to help everyone assemble this song. Check it out below, then grab your friends and see if you can put together this song - it’s quite an experience. Or just take a look at the responses already up, people have used two browsers and many tabs to create the aural affair.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
