News USF

This is classic Hipster Runoff baiting stuff.

Everything has to end sometime. One day, we will all perish and be forgotten, just as our ancestors have before us. However, you can’t help but feel that chillwave will be gone long before our time comes. But for now, let’s bask in its languid, reverb laden charms, letting the nostalgia glow radiate over us in all its time-sensitive glory.

And if you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right. USF is an acronym for University of South Florida, and it’s also the name of one of the most exciting new acts coming out of… Seattle. Either way, this is classic Hipster Runoff baiting stuff, two guys making music that meanders, grasping at abstract ideas about what the backwaters of your mind might sound like, the soundtrack to a million forgotten, meaningless memories. They even – get this – manage to pull off a 10 minute, sprawling epic, a trickle of noise that slowly becomes a torrent of bubbling synth, the title track from their ‘Jamaica Plain’ EP. Anyone who’s been paying the slightest bit of attention won’t be surprised to know that it’s being released through a boutique label on a limited run – the only shock being that they’ve opted for vinyl rather than the oh-so-now choice of cassette.

Much like the faded photographs and childhood dreams they aim to evoke, one day you’ll look back upon this and question what on earth you were doing. It’s aimless, twinkling and monstrous in turns, rarely sure of what it can be, but for now, let’s appreciate the beauty. This is pop music without limits, the work of two dudes who have spent a lifetime imbibing culture, and are only now going about pouring it out through the medium of garage band recordings.
