Neu WHY’s Yoni Wolf Tips: Kitty Pryde & Ka

Is rap in remission from wackness?”, asks Yoni, as he bigs-up Kitty Pryde and Ka.”

Ahead of the band’s DIY-associated UK tour this week, WHY?’s Yoni Wolf has whittled down some of his favourite new music to bring us two Neu tips, both exciting new rappers who flip hip-hop mainstays on their head. We’ll let Yoni explain his choices below:

The two new(ish) artists who I’ve been listening to the most lately are both rappers. Kitty is a woman, Ka is a man. Kitty is white, Ka is black. Kitty is from the suburbs of Florida, Ka is from the ghettos of Brownsville, The Bronx. Kitty is quite young, Ka is quite old (to be starting his career). Both are outstanding rhymesmiths. It is extremely rare for me to come across a rapper that impresses me and here I am coming across two in quick succession. This is a good sign for rap music!

Is rap in remission from wackness? Both require me to rewind in a way I haven’t done since MF DOOM or the third Outkast album. I am very happy. Here are a couple stanzas about guilt and admission/held tongues from very different points of view. I love this shit!

Here’s a line from ‘hittin lixxx’ on Kitty’s D.A.I.S.Y. rage:

‘…And I was gonna snitch until you turned on your charm,
And it’s the bully sort I’d pull like forty fire alarms for.
You know I’m wooly soft. I’m not very hard,
So you pull me when we’re running from security guards.’

And here’s a line from ‘Collage’ on KA’s Grief Pedigree:

‘Niggas get wet for wantin’ rep.
Spill all, they ain’t built for it.
We ain’t talking sets (guns).
Drama wit’ llama promises or more or less threats.’

The DIY-associated UK tour will kick off in Liverpool tonight (7th May), with further dates at Kazimier, Liverpool (7th May), Brudenell Social Club, Leeds (8th) & Islington Assembly Hall, London (9th).
