News Widower

Waiting for a fire to start… dark, brooding, outlandish, enigmatic. This is Widower.

Widower are a musical duo based in London, formed of Banks (previously of Haunts fame) and Chloe Little. Encompassing elements of Goth, New Wave, Post-Punk and Electroclash it may be easy to hype them as part of the current wave of 80’s revivalists and I suppose that’s fairly accurate. However, as most acts of this ilk these days list the same two or three bands as influences (invariably Joy Division, The Cure and The Smiths) and then proceed to rip them off in their own imaginative way, Widower are something a bit different. In their flagship track ‘Exposure’ there are traces of Depeche Mode, Killing Joke, Suicide and Cabaret Voltaire among others, but they have managed to avoid sounding like any of them in particular.

‘Exposure’ is fantastic. The full version includes a mind-bending soundscape intro before the processed beats and arpeggiated synths take control. Couple this with a tight, eerie, two-part vocal harmony and a terrific chorus and it’s a winner. This is without a doubt my favourite track at the moment, and it’s available as a free download on RCRD LBL.

EXPOSE is an interactive web-based art piece by Widower, in conjunction with image-maker Malcom Pate, to accompany ‘Exposure’. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what to think the first time you experience this, there’s nothing normal about it. It’s bizarre, engrossing, inexplicable and possibly the work of a madman, but it’s very interesting and well worth a look.

Everything about these guys is inscrutable; from their abrasive soundscapes to their future-witch image. Keep an eye out for ‘Promise Of Love’, a single due to be released with Pure Groove in October. In the meantime, you can catch this unique duo live at Proud, Camden on 9th September.
