Psychedelia infused folk-rock.

Either they’re running out of money or they’ve let their game slip, but somewhere along the line Woodsist have slipped up by not begging WRUGS for permission to press a few of their tracks to vinyl for a 7”. Psychedelia infused folk-rock has admittedly been a bit thick on the ground of late, but with the major of bands just sticking to caterwauling over boring, nowhere fast guitars and hoping for the best, it only accentuates the quality that the Chicago group have to offer.

Having had a couple of EP’s reach minor blogging acclaim in the past couple of years, you feel as though their latest effort – Smokey Courts – should be the one that finally gets them their well deserved breakthrough. It’s an ambient pool of noise, music that Fleet Foxes might’ve made if they’d spent more time smoking and less listening to Fleetwood Mac, stuff that you feel you could happily become submerged in and life a decent enough life.

There’s something altogether reassuring about how they simply let their songs trundle along, with little worry about having to try at anything resembling pop music for the majority of the time. When they do have a stab at making something vaguely radio friendly, it’s celestial in its beauty whilst still achieving the feat of being 800 times more listenable than most of XFM’s current daytime playlist. Whilst dreams of kids listening to some weirdos from Illinois instead of Kings of Leon might be pretty far off, you can rest safe knowing that WRUGS are still out there making noise, regardless.
