Two boys making noise with instruments in someone’s bedroom.

The least you can ask for a new band to do is capture your attention. YRRS take this maxim and twist it to it’s logical conclusion – straight off the bat, the Southampton based duo take a choke hold and utterly refuse to let go with their scintillating take on an old, old lo-fi recipe. Connoisseurs amongst you might be able to detect subtle hints of early years Wavves in amongst all the fuzz, or even undertones of the racket that came with Times New Vikings.

In truth, YRRS probably spent about as much time worrying about that kind of thing as they did sorting out the fidelity for their two scant recordings, and they’re crafted two rough, ragged gems. In truth, the issue of clarity is probably as much down to the fact that this is just two boys making noise with instruments in someone’s bedroom – but what a noise they make.

So whilst distortion might be easy to replicate, the alt-pop gold that lay beneath are not so open to plagiarism. Starting by borrowing a title from a seminal Wu Tang Clan track, ‘Gravel Pit’ chooses not to dabble with lucid flows and verse, but visceral melody making. Kristian and Paeris are the axis that bring it to life, conveying not only their hunt for a decent riff throughout the recording, but actually having fun whilst doing it. Upon completion, the first thing that comes to mind is inevitably either the urge to go for a repeat spin, or to wistfully what a force of nature they’d be live.
