South London’s Zulu Winter certainly have a few things going for them. Firstly, they’re buddies with leading UK 7” label Double Denim. Secondly, they’ve got a pretty decent name, something that is rather pleasant after you’ve seemingly listened to every ‘The’ band under the sun. They also have their own blog (zuluwinter.blogspot.com), from which members Will, Dom, Henry, Iain and Guy showcase their views, pleasures and even some music from time to time.
First came ‘Lets Move Back To Front’, which will obviously draw similarities to Kendal’s finest export Wild Beasts. From the opening cowbell hits to the gentle, caressing guitars and soaringly high falsetto like vocals. But while The Beasts are happy to keep a song at a steady, warming pace throughout, Zulu Winter on the other hand look intent on creating a more direct, even explosive ending to theirs.
Second number ‘Silver Tongue’ sees the band take a more traditional approach from the offset, all the while still containing their key aforementioned elements, which again reach a tremendous zenith when passing the three-minute mark.
After apparently working with producer Tom Morris (The Boxer Rebellion / Japanese Voyeurs) and now beginning to play shows up and down the country, something tells me that this is only the beginning for this talented lot.
