News Zulu Winter’s Top Five Radio Shows

Zulu Winter released their latest single ‘Never Leave’/ ‘Let’s Move Back To Front’ this week via Double Denim Records, and after hearing that we have our own online radio station, they put us together a list of their Top 5 shows for inspiration.

One: Johnny Trunk’s OST show on Resonance FM
Mr Trunk, in my opinion, is only DJ I would mention in the same breath as John Peel. His show is completely different, focusing on soundtracks, library music and the like, with each show being themed either around a composer such as John Barry, or an idiosyncratic musical thing such as Sesame Street! His Peelism comes through his vast knowledge and his often haphazard presenting style which makes you tune in every week.

Two: Adam and Joe On Radio 6 Music
Simply because they are the funniest presenters on air but also because when their producer makes them play something they don’t like, they are less than subtle about how they feel about it! When they were off air quite recently my weekends were longer darker days.

Three: The Late Junction On Radio 3
The only place where you can hear a recording of an egg being fried next to a classical piece then yodeling from the Swiss Alps. Also since it’s broadcast late at night (hence the title!), there’s a nice laid back feel to the presenting and the pieces selected to play, no shock-jock DJing thank you!

Four: 90 FM
I think this is a Ghanian radio station, which at times plays some of the best Highlife music and other African based sounds you’re likely to hear in the UK. However, if you tune in at the wrong time you’re likely to hear over an hour’s worth of adverts you don’t understand or strange debates which make absolutely no sense! I used to record it off the radio and I have more than one tape which has one tune and then the sounds of people shouting at me about a party in Manor House!

Five: UVB-76
This is a Russian ‘numbers station’, which reputedly has been broadcasting the same programme of tones and digits since at least 1982. There is speculation that the messages could be a backup system for the Russian military to transmit orders, or a coded protocol for sending information between intelligence agents. A fan of the shortwave station has created a blog with an audio stream.

‘Never Leave’/ ‘Let’s Move Back To Front’ is available now via Double Denim Records.
