Interview 60 Seconds With: Guards

Cults, Black Sabbath and (this one time at) Bandcamp.

Never ones to give too much away, we caught up with the elusive Guards for a high speed 60 Second chat about Cults, Black Sabbath and (this one time at) Bandcamp.

You first came into the media spotlight after Cults tweeted a link to your Bandcamp - how did that happen?
They were featured on one of the songs so they tweeted about it.

You’re not really into your social networking yourself - why is that?
I would rather make music. I don’t want to sit on a computer promoting myself all day.

You haven’t got a Myspace or website so you’re considered quite mysterious – was that intentional?
No, not really. I never really understood what was mysterious about Guards putting up the Bandcamp page. All the info was very clear - my name and where I live was on the front page. Maybe Bandcamp seems more mysterious because there is no ‘bio’ section. I guess if you’re not on Cribs you’re mysterious. I like knowing more about the art than I do about the artist.

Your EP covers a varied spectrum of sounds - did you draw inspiration from different sources? If so, what were they?
Yes, I was all over the place when I was writing. Everything from Jackie Wilson, Black Sabbath, Ennio Morricone, Roy Orbison, Beatles, The Jam, Stooges, Buddy Holly, all our friends…

Do you have a favourite track?
Resolution of One or Crystal Truth

Online the information about the band is quite conflicting. Let’s get this straightened out. Are you a solo artist/whole band/solo artist with different collaborators or something completely different?
I’m still figuring out what I am… maybe all those things.

Caroline Polachek guest vocals on the EP - will you be working with different vocalists in the future?
I hope so! I love working with different people, especially Caroline and Madeline - they are the best.

You have quite a musical family - how do you think their various talents have influenced your sound?
I learned almost everything I know from my step-father, and I have learned a lot as well playing with my little sister. I even write with her voice in mind sometimes.

Are you working on any new material at the moment?
We just released a free cover songs digital 7” on our Bandcamp site and will be releasing a few more singles of originals in the coming months. The full length will hopefully be out this year - we have so many songs recorded just have to pick and choose!

Finally, what else does 2011 have in store for you?
SXSW is next and hopefully Europe again in the summer!
