Get To Know... Amie Blu

Neu Get To Know… Amie Blu

Soul-baring soundscapes from South London’s musical hotbed.

Hello and welcome back to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… which aims to get you a little bit closer to the buzziest acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.

This time around, we’re catching up with Amie Blu - the London-based singer-songwriter whose lo-fi, soulful tracks mine emotional depths with apparent ease, finding her fans in the likes of SZA and seeing her notch up support slots alongside fellow honey-toned favourites like Joy Crookes and Faye Webster. Having shared her ‘how we lose’ mixtape last year, Amie’s raised the bar even higher in 2025 with a trio of recent offerings - ‘swimming in pity’, ‘missing everything’, and ‘shadow’ - that are nothing short of cinematic. To mark the arrival of ‘shadow’, Amie told us more about her lyrical process, the double-edged sword of socials, and her go-to dishes for cooking up a storm…

Describe your music to us in non-musical terms.
Like when you’re swimming in the sea and it starts raining.

You hail from South East London, which is a part of the city that’s known for having a really distinct cultural identity. For you, musically, what was it like growing up there?
To be honest, there wasn’t that much going on in my area… I think it’s probably like everywhere in London; if you’re passionate about something, you just need to find what you can and do whatever you can to make it work.

What was your first song/album?
Justin Bieber’s ‘My World 2.0’… my mum bought it ‘cos I would’ve been about seven years old, lol, but it’s probably the best purchase she’s ever made.

If you’re passionate about something, you just need to find what you can and do whatever you can to make it work.”

Lyrically, your work doesn’t shy away from exploring weighty topics, but the tracks themselves aren’t necessarily sombre - take ‘swimming in pity’, which is both a song about depression, and really quite anthemic. How do you walk this emotional tightrope?
Sometimes it’s a conscious decision; I love juxtaposition. But at other times, that’s just the direction we’ve gone in ‘cos it sounds lit. Also, most of my songs are sad so I’ve gotta switch it up somehow!

Your latest single, ‘shadow’, has just come out - but people have been obsessing over snippets of it online for weeks now! How does it feel to have this sort of digital community?
It feels really good and really cool. I’m very grateful for everyone who listens to my music, and it makes me happy that people are connecting with ‘shadow’. However, social media can fluctuate drastically, so it’s really important not to let that be your main source of validation; I wrote ‘shadow’ a year ago, and loved it just as much back then - now, it’s just extra cool people are resonating with it :)

If you could be in a band/collab with an artist from the past two decades, who would you pick and why?
Ugh, my answer will always change depending on the day… right now, I’ll probably say Elliot Smith - but he’s the lead singer and guitarist, I just sing backing vocals (and my mic is muted).

Finally, DIY are coming round for dinner - what are you making?
Honestly, I rotate between the same two things… you can either have creamy salmon pasta or you can have chorizo pasta, I’ll let you guys decide. They’re both a 6.5 out of 10, but made with love <3

‘shadow’ is out now.
