Get To Know Get To Know… Juliet Ivy
Tender, emotionally intelligent songwriting making girls everywhere feel seen.
Born and bred in NYC, 23 year old Juliet Ivy is at the forefront of a new age of indie-leaning bedroom pop - one which builds on the foundations laid by the likes of beabadoobee and Clairo to paint vivid, intimate portraits of the coming of age experience. Across five tracks, Juliet’s just-released new EP ‘tiny but scary’ employs diary-like lyricism and gentle guitars to capture, in her words, “all the ever-changing, complicated, intertwined emotions of being a young girl”. It’s music that’ll be of immense comfort to anyone going through it, and which will transport anyone who’s been there already back in a heartbeat. To mark the project’s release, we caught up with Juliet to chat about what she’s learned so far…
1. What’s your earliest musical memory?
My earliest musical memory is playing this video game called Sing Star after school everyday and screaming ‘Put Your Records On’, ‘Mr. Brightside’, and ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ at the top of my lungs in my parents’ basement. :)
2. You grew up in a Chinese-Colombian family and live in New York. Can you tell us a bit more about how this mix of different cultures have influenced you, both as a person and a musician?
Both cultures are so different yet so meaningful to me! I think growing up embracing two completely different sides of myself has inspired me to do the same with anything else that makes me who I am - different sides of my personality, different interests of mine, different musical styles, etc. I am the best version of myself when I embrace everything that makes me who I am instead of feeling a pressure to choose one thing! Growing up Colombian-Chinese taught me that<3
3. Your new EP, ‘tiny but scary’, looks at the experience of coming of age as a young woman in 2024. What advice would you have for anyone else going through similar challenges or periods of change?
I would say the best advice is to listen to yourself and truly trust your intuition! My song ‘girl talk’ is about exactly that - our gut is so strong and we are meant to listen to it. Believe in yourself, do what you want, you are so powerful!!!
“I think growing up embracing two completely different sides of myself has inspired me to do the same with anything else that makes me who I am.”
4. How do you feel you’ve changed or developed since the release of your debut EP, ‘playpen’, last year? Are there any key things you’ve learned?
I think I’ve definitely learned to trust myself rather than do what I think I’m meant to do. Releasing ‘playpen’ was really gratifying to see that people connected to music that was so authentic to me. I decided to release those songs even when I wasn’t sure if they would resonate with people, and it makes my heart explode to know that they did<3 I am also just continuously so grateful for every single day I get to make music and pursue what I love. I plan on working harder and harder - this is just the beginning :)
5. You’ve already had a fair few viral moments - if ‘we’re all eating each other’ was “nihilism but make it girly pop”, what would be your one sentence description for your single ‘4 foot 2’?
I think it would have to be the line of the hook: “when I’m hurting me, I’m hurting her”. I think it’s just such a heartfelt reminder that everything we do and how we treat ourselves directly affects the inner child that’s within us until the day we die - we have to protect them<3
6. Who would be your dream collaborator, and why?
Omg I really can’t decide, but probably Frank Ocean because his lyrics inspire me every single day, and ‘Blonde’ is probably my favorite album ever.
7. Finally, DIY are coming round for dinner - what are you making?
Pesto pasta of course (it’s my favorite food, my dog is named pesto), with so much parmesan cheese that you can’t see the pasta anymore.
‘tiny but scary’ is out now.
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
