Finland-via-Mexico singer Joalin talks her latest track 'Without You' and playing Flow Festival 2024

Festivals Joalin: “I’m honoured to get to perform at Flow Festival”

Ahead of the Helsinki event, we caught up with the rising Finland-via-Mexico singer about her inspirations, upbringing and latest single ‘Without You’.

One of Northern Europe’s most unforgettable weekends, Helsinki’s Flow Festival isn’t just about the artists, it’s about the experience. Set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, the festival not only has a huge list of stars set to play across its three days (Fred again.., RAYE, Pulp and Halsey to name but a few), but there’ll also be hypnotic sound sculptures and art exhibitions, talks on sustainability and creative technologies, and a host of immersive experiences to embrace.

Also taking the stage at the Finnish festival will be Finland-via-Mexico talent Joalin. Fresh from releasing her newest single ‘Without You’, we caught up with the singer to find out how she’s feeling ahead of her (sort of) hometown show…

Hello Joalin! How’re you doing and what have you been up to recently?
Lately I’ve been spending lots of time with family; summer is short in Finland where I currently live so I’ve been trying to enjoy it as much as I can.

What’s your earliest musical memory?

This one is hard to answer, music has always been there even before I have memory. I started dancing when I was three, and that continued until I was 16. I remember always feeling very connected to music, I’ve always loved and been intrigued by any genre of music.

How did you end up being inspired to start working on music?

I’ve always been super creative. I’ve also always had this weird big feeling inside that I need to be a performer or an artist. I fulfilled that feeling through dance for a very long time until I moved to Finland and for the first time met someone that asked me to try making music, then my life changed.

You grew up in Finland and then moved to Spain, before moving to Mexico when you were 10; do you think that move helped to shaped your relationship with music and creativity?
Growing up in 2 Spanish speaking countries definitely has had an effect in my music. I lived in Mexico for some of the most defining years of my life (from 10 til 19) and I believe i am the way I am thanks to Mexico. I hope every person is lucky enough to meet a Mexican during their life; they are pure love and joy and so is their music. Now living in Finland I miss waking up and going to sleep to music coming from outside my window.

You’ve just released your latest single ‘Without You’. Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired the song, and what you wanted to explore with it?

I remember the day my producer played me the beat. It’s pretty close to how it sounds now. I heard it and immediately fell in love. It was summer last year and we were off to a party after our session so I wanted to bring that energy on to this song. Just young reckless summer thoughts.

For its video, you worked with DEADHORSES; what was it like making the video and collaborating?Oh my god, [it was] one of the longest shoots I’ve had and I was freezing and hungry by the end of it, but I admit I was a bit sad when we were done. I had so much fun with the whole crew and the boys made me feel like a star for the entire day!

You’ve played a few festivals already this summer and have some more on the way! What’s your favourite thing about performing at events like these?
My favourite thing is the moment I step on stage and all the nervousness just melts away. It’s like magic. I step into character and just let myself go. I’ve always loved being on stages and making people feel something through art. It’s so cool to be able to do it with my own music now, the art that I’ve been part of creating.

You’re going to be playing at Flow Festival this week! How’re you feeling? Have you been able to play in Finland much before?
Yes I am! I just did a show last month in my hometown Turku and the energy was magical. I personally love Flow so I’m honoured to get to perform there. I’m also trying to fit some extra rehearsals prior to the show so I can add more dance to the set.
