Interview Metric: “Nostalgia just leads to nausea”

Group talk revivalism ahead of their new album, ‘Pagans in Vegas’.

Canadians Metric have made their comeback with two new tracks and the announcement of new album ‘Pagans in Vegas’.

Ahead of its release, however, the group dismiss any “nostalgic” associations their return to music might have.

Speaking in the July issue of DIY, the band’s Jimmy Shaw speaks about how Metric’s new album discovers romance in another age, without dipping into nostalgia. “I think it’s more just the reality of who we are in this time,” he says. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to be nostalgic because the past is changing so fast. Nostalgia just leads to nausea.

Giving more details about the forthcoming album, Shaw says: “We had vowed to take 2014 off entirely, but by April both Emily and I realised that we’d written more than an album’s worth of material each. So we decided, in typical Metric style, to use our year off to make records. We chose one style of music that was quite apparent within the vault of songs and went with it. The result was ‘PIV’. There are other songs with different vibes. They will be alive soon too.”
