The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

have been all over the place recently - from an appearance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, to the band’s single ‘Around The Bend’ soundtracking the latest iPod advert. All this and their debut album isn’t out for another couple of months. We have a chat to find out how the band are finding it all.

Hello! Who are you and what do you do in The Asteroids Galaxy Tour?
Mette, the singer.

So, your debut album’s coming out in April - how did you find recording? Was it more fun or stressful?
We (Lars and Me) record in our studio, a little bit here and a little bit there, and then we get back to it again and work on it. Our first album (‘Fruit’) was mostly recorded at Lars’ flat in late ‘07 and through ‘08, so it’s build up fresh and just got out of the oven when the album was mastered around Christmas ‘08. We had great fun, no bad stress.

Why ‘Fruit’?
Try to say it, and taste the word!

Do you test out new material live before you decide whether to record it? How important is it that songs transfer from one medium to the other?
We write it / record it / produce it, and then we play it with the band in our rehearsal studio… so we don’t test it, it just has to work hehe..

We read in another interview that you may not have released ‘Around The Bend’ had Apple not wanted to use it - is that true? Do you think it’s a better single in hindsight than you did at the time?
Well it’s not quit true. The song was to be released, but not necesserely that fast. It was of course a great thing to get the Apple ad, so we swapped some things around a bit, so everything could fit!

Do you find singing in English makes more opportunities open to the band?
Yes. I don’t think that singing in Danish would get you out in the world playing the same way! We are only 5.5 million people in DK, small country. No one else speeks Danish… In Denmark we are tought English in school from an early age, so it feels very natural.

You collaborate a lot on stage with other musicians, will you expand your set up to include more instruments and arrangements as time goes on, or will you continue in a similar form to how you are now?
Only time will tell. Right now we feel perfectly fine the way it is with the band. We are all good friends. We do have some new live things/visuals we are working on, but thats a secret…

Do you have any UK shows coming up? Will you be touring around the album release?
Can’t give you the right dates, but we will be touring around the album release, both in UK/US/DK/Germany/France… and other places. Looking forward to that a lot. Love playing live.

And finally, you’ve become well known over here rather quickly, has it taken you by surprise at all? Does it feel like it’s been quick to you guys?
We are… that’s great! We feel that things are happening fast, but no one knows about us in Denmark yet, so we don’t hear it on the radio or through TV. Don’t know if I thought about it at all!
