Interview The Hours

We caught up with the band’s Ant Genn as way of an introduction to his and Martin Slattery’s new band, The Hours.

The Hours

Ant Genn and Martin Slattery have, as we’ve probably said before, one hell of a CV. From Joe Strummer to Jarvis Cocker, they’ve worked with a lot of famous people. And had infamous Brit artist Damien Hirst design their CD sleeves. So, we caught up with Ant as way of an introduction…

You seem to describe ‘The Hours’ as more of a way of life than a band - is this how you perceive it?
You could say that I suppose. The Hours exist because of music, not because we wanted to be in a band,or cos we wanted to be cool. Our music is an extension of who we are as people, what you see is what you get.

With such impressive CVs, and the people who’ve worked on your record, are you feeling the pressure of expectation?
The biggest pressure comes from ourselves,we aspire to succeed on our own terms, not the terms of the world. If we write a song that we love, and make it sound as good coming out of the speakers as it does inside our heads, then we’ve succeeded as far as we’re concerned. If people expect big things from us that’s fine but to us it’s about music, not awards and money and all that stuff.

You had Damien Hirst create your artwork - were you not a bit scared you’d end up with something that’d be banned from the high street?!
Damien is an amazing artist who understands how to communicate with people through his art. He doesn’t try and shock people for the sake of it, only when it’s a neccesary part of a piece. He’s too smart to do something for us that would be banned. We love our artwork!

You’ve both worked with an amazing set of people. Who have been particular favourites?
I think Joe Strummer for both of us,he was a legend and we learned a lot from him. Sly and Robbie also were amazing to work with and I absolutely love Mr Ian Brown, he’s a beautiful human being!

Why ‘Narcissus Road’?
IIt’s a road in West Hampstead and I’d often walk past it and thought it was a great title for a song. Then I had a relationship with a pathalogical narcissist and bingo! There you have it!

Describe The Hours in under five words!
Big, brash, honest, anthemic POP!!

What do you hope to achieve in 2007?
We want to get our music out there to as many people as possible, play every festival, club, radio station, tv show that we can. We’re gonna convert people one by one if we have to, resistance is futile!!

Finally, what’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about you?
Well, the nicest reaction to a song was the other day when we played a Janice Long Radio 2 session. We played a song from our album called ‘I Miss You’ which is about my dad who died 5 years ago and she cried live on air. It’s amazing to think we could write something that could move someone to tears. She said having us on her show made her year which meant a lot to us cos we love Janice.
