In the magazine October 2016

Featuring Honeyblood, Jagwar Ma, Danny Brown, Gengahr, Sleigh Bells and more.

Welcome Honeyblood to the cover of DIY; they’re bringing the horror along for the ride, too.

“In the basement where we set up, there was this little room where the mill was, and there was a little window in the door, and we joked about a face being in the door all the time,” drummer Cat Myers remembers, equal parts joking and genuinely fearful. “We’d be jamming and it’d be really really loud, in the dead of night, and we’d keep looking at this door, paranoid that there would eventually be a face there.”

Vocalist and guitarist Stina Tweeddale, a self-confessed fan of overblown horror narratives, feared the worst. “You know how it goes,” she begins in a drawn out Stateside accent, “there’s a band on tour, driving to a weird gaaaas station…”

They survived, though, bringing new album ‘Babes Never Die’ out from the basement.

Elsewhere, we chat to Danny Brown about the darkness that fed into new album ‘Atrocity Exhibition’, and Jagwar Ma talk learning to let go when it came to new album ‘Every Now & Then’.

Heading in the studio with Gengahr, we get the first word on their incoming second album, and we also chat to Sleigh Bells, Kero Kero Bonito, Slaves, Kate Tempest and more about their new records. It’s a busy ol’ time!

In Neu, we meet doo-wop revivalists Trudy and The Romance, Klangstof and Julia Jacklin, and as ever there’s the full rundown of all the month’s new releases and best live shows.
