Imperial: ‘Producers Need Rappers, And Rappers Need Producers’

DIY Radio’s Into The Mix tracks down producer Imperial.

In last week’s Into The Mix, on DIY Radio, Ioan Holland caught up with Illect Recordings-signed producer Imperial, who told us all about the relationship between the hip hop genre, rappers and producers.

“I think the [hip hop] genre embedded into it already has this sort of philosophy of allowing people to remix tracks, so I think [the relationship] works really well,” he explained. “Remixing hip hop tracks is a really good way to work with vocals that are really tight really good, talented lyricists - and just experiment.

“If you’re starting out in hip hop, it’s a great way to have vocals on your track. You know, go and find some a cappellas and make an instrumental and generate a bit of buzz about your stuff, to prove that you can produce good quality instrumentals and then get recognition and then go from there.”

“I think a lot of MCs don’t necessarily produce and they’re always looking for remixes of their stuff,” he continued. “So if you’re a hip hop producer, it works quite well. Because you need rappers and rappers need producers. So it’s quite a good place to be.”
