Xander The Great Unveil ‘Custom Love’ Track

Dynamic, future-leaning R&B; pop is Xander’s game. It’s working wonders.

Plenty of us won’t be crying out for extensions on The Weeknd’s heartbroken, party-comedown R&B;, but in Xander The Great we’ve got a new act that make a progressive, intriguing step onwards from Abel Tesfaye’s breakthrough.

The debut track ‘Somewhere Tonight’ was Xander’s way of spelling out initial intentions, without giving too much away. Half old-school guitar work, the other half acute, head-spinning riffs - it made quite the impression.

Follow-up ‘Custom Love’ is a little more direct. Guitars are again the focal point, on top of which Xander the Great gel silky, conventional vocals with a fascinating array of instrumentation. Like some maddening contemporary combination of Drake, Beach House and, naturally, The Weeknd, it’s enough to flummox every music listener going first time round, and it requires multiple listens before you can begin to take in the scope of the whole thing.

Stream Xander the Great’s ‘Custom Love’ below. We can’t wait for the debut London shows, which are surely just a few months away.
