Suki Waterhouse - Loveland

“I’m loving my lust for life / Turning the dark to light,” Suki Waterhouse sings in rather invigorating fashion on the sun-kissed, psychedelic-rock tinged ‘Back In Love’, the opener to her third album ‘Loveland’. Given Waterhouse’s acting credentials, it could understandably be deemed a little lazy to describe the record as cinematic, yet, given its grandiose and expansive tone, it would feel unjustified not to say as such. ‘Notting Hill’ exemplifies this, standing as a beguiling baroque-pop piano ballad that then morphs into a colossal, anthemic guitar solo. 

Elsewhere, she channels the spirit of Beach House and Cocteau Twins for one of the record’s stand out moments, ‘Happy With It’; a shimmering wonder that could soundtrack frolicking through enchanting verdant gardens, it soon unleashes a crunching psych-pop guitar riff that’s reminiscent of Tame Impala’s ‘Lonerism’ years. The title track itself, meanwhile, meanders between country and psychedelia, making for a cosmic, psychotropic affair, before ‘Weirdo’ closes proceedings with its bewitching, hypnagogic-inducing space-pop. An album scattered with gems across its lengthy 14-track odyssey, ‘Loveland’ is a testament to Suki Waterhouse’s pursuit of further sonic exploration.
