Black Honey cause a stir at Glastonbury 2017

Before the last song of their John Peel Stage set, Black Honey’s Izzy Phillips tells the crowd that the band promised themselves that they’d never come to Glastonbury until they were invited to play. You wouldn’t blame them for being so confident, and today’s early slot points the way towards further trips to Worthy Farm on a significantly larger scale. Latest single ‘Somebody Better’ feels perfectly at home in a tent as cavernous as this, seeing the band at their most anthemic and driving. Izzy’s stage presence - a glittery, commanding figure that prowls the stage when she’s not hammering away at the guitar - is growing with every next show, and not only is the band’s placing on such a legendary stage deserved, it’s the start of something much bigger. ‘Hello Today’‘s stop-start intensity is mirrored in a crowd that gets sucked in so much that they’re firmly in the palm of the band’s collective hand come its finale. As early, sober starts to a festival go, Black Honey’s was brilliantly chaotic.
